Promposal ideas for your girlfriend (or boyfriend) that feel personal
The cutest promposals aren’t the biggest ones. They’re the ones that could only be for one person: your inside jokes, your song, the story of how you two got here. Here are promposal ideas for her and for him, starting with one that saves the question for the final story spread.
Idea #1: a book that asks the question
“A story. A question.” is our Chapters to Keep book for asking: A personal, playful way to ask someone to prom or homecoming. You tell us how you two know each other; we write and illustrate it as a 32-page book. The details step asks three questions:
- Your story so far: How you met and a favorite memory.
- Their favorite things: Music, hobbies, pets, or an inside joke.
- The exact question: Will you go to prom with me? Include the event name.
The surprise ending is turned on automatically for prom books, and the exact question is required. The first page says “Don't look ahead! Read one page at a time.” and the big moment waits on the last page. The last-page words are yours, up to 120 characters; the form suggests “Will you go to prom with me?”
Add everyone who should be in the book, people and pets. Each person can have up to 8 photos, or none: you can describe them instead. Before adding anyone’s photos, read the note for parents below.
More cute promposal ideas for her
Not every ask needs a book. These ideas cost more thought than money.
- The snack pun. Her favorite snack and a sign with a terrible pun. The worse the pun, the better the photo.
- A scavenger hunt through your story. Clues at your places, ending with you and the question.
- One flower at a time. Friends hand her flowers between classes; the last one comes from you.
- The playlist. Songs that tell your story, with the question as the playlist name.
- Sidewalk chalk. The question in big letters outside her home. Ask her family first; they can help keep the secret.
- Her dog is in on it. A little sign on the family pet’s collar, with the family’s permission.
- The puzzle. Write the question across a blank jigsaw puzzle, break it apart and hand her the box.
- After her game, show or recital. Wait until her moment is over, then bring flowers and ask.
Promposal ideas for him
- Letters on his locker. Sticky notes that spell out the question, one letter per note.
- Pizza with a message. The question spelled out in toppings, delivered by you.
- A new quest. If he games, hand him a quest card: “New quest unlocked: prom. Accept?”
- His friends as the crew. One letter each, held up as he walks out of practice or rehearsal.
- A box of donuts. One iced letter on each: P, R, O, M and a question mark.
Promposal ideas for book lovers
- A bookmark with a message. Slip one into the book they are reading, with the question on the back.
- Hidden words. In your own copy of their favorite book, lightly underline words that spell out the question.
- A story where they are the main character. That is idea #1: the first page tells them not to look ahead, and every spread brings them closer to the question.
Our fictional sample book shows how a story builds to its final spread; it ends with a marriage proposal, and we also make books for marriage proposals. For prompts, see our love story book ideas.
Timing your ask
Promposals usually happen weeks before the dance, so plan backward from the day you want to ask. Allow about 3 weeks for a printed book, including creation, your prompt approval, printing, and delivery. Dates are estimates. Allow up to 5 business days for the first proof. Order about a month ahead and approve your proof promptly.
Your occasion date is a request, not a guaranteed delivery date. If your date is firm, contact us before ordering. See our order and delivery details.
For parents
If your teen is planning a promposal, know this before ordering:
- Photos. For children’s photos, a parent or guardian must place or authorize the order. Only upload images you have permission to use. If you prefer no photos, describe the characters.
- Proofs and updates. We send updates and proofs to the purchaser, even when the book ships as a gift. If you place the order, they come to you, and nothing prints until you approve the proof.
- Privacy. Your order and photos are kept in private storage and used to create and fulfill your book. We do not publish them as examples without permission.

Questions
Can I use it for homecoming?
Yes. It is “A personal, playful way to ask someone to prom or homecoming.” Put the event name in your exact question, for example: “Will you go to homecoming with me?”
How long does it take?
A printed book typically needs about 3 weeks overall; busy periods, delayed approval, and shipping can add time. Contact us before ordering for a firm event deadline.
Can it ship to me so it stays a surprise?
Yes. At “You & shipping,” choose Ship to: Me. The book arrives with you, and you decide when they see it.
How should I ask someone to prom?
Keep it simple, personal and kind: say the question clearly, including which dance, somewhere they will feel comfortable. If you aren’t sure of the answer, ask in private.
